If you ask Makayla Garcia what she loves most about marketing, she probably won’t start by talking about campaigns, social media, or analytics.

She’ll talk about people.

For Makayla, the best stories are usually found in the moments that might otherwise go unnoticed—the accomplishment someone deserves to be recognized for, the work a client is doing in their community, or an idea that started as a simple conversation and grew into something worth sharing.

It’s why she jokingly considers herself part of the BryMar “hype team.”

“I love getting to show off the people at BryMar and the work our clients are doing,” Makayla shared. “There are so many great stories here, and I get to help tell them.”

In many ways, that comes naturally to her.

A People Person at Heart

Born and raised in the Bay Area, Makayla grew up in Mountain View as the oldest of five siblings. Between growing up in a big family and participating in a variety of sports, she was constantly surrounded by different people and personalities. Dance and soccer were always her favorites, and those experiences helped her become comfortable meeting new people, working as part of a team, and connecting with others naturally.

That interest in connecting with people eventually led Makayla to study Communications at San Jose State University, where she became even more curious about how people share ideas, interpret information, and build relationships.

“Ever since I was little, I’ve loved telling stories and connecting with people,” she said. “Studying communications only deepened my interest in sharing experiences and bringing people together.”

During college, an internship with a well-known review company gave her the opportunity to see those interests come together in a new way. By highlighting local businesses and the people behind them, Makayla saw firsthand how a good story could introduce someone to a new place, strengthen a sense of community, and create connections that may not have existed otherwise.

Something clicked.

Marketing wasn’t simply about promoting something. When done well, it could help people understand why something—or someone—was worth knowing.

Finding Her Place at BryMar

Makayla’s path into marketing wasn’t perfectly linear.

Before joining BryMar, she held roles in administration and event planning, picking up different experiences along the way and slowly discovering the kind of work that energized her most.

Then came BryMar.

“BryMar took a chance on me, and I’m so grateful they did,” she said. “It hasn’t even been a full year yet, but I’ve already learned so much and am really enjoying growing into this role.”

What she found at BryMar was a place where her curiosity about people could become one of her greatest strengths.

Makayla loves starting with an idea and watching it evolve. There’s something satisfying to her about seeing the pieces come together, especially when the end result helps someone feel more connected to BryMar.

“I love seeing ideas come to life,” she explained. “From planning, writing, and outreach to design and finally sharing something with our team, clients, or prospects, it’s always rewarding to see the finished product.”

And she’s learning not to expect every idea to follow a perfect path.

Some things work. Some need to be rethought. Others turn into something completely different from where they started. Makayla appreciates all of it because each experience teaches her something new about people and what resonates with them.

The Stories She Loves Most

It probably comes as no surprise that some of Makayla’s favorite moments at BryMar are the ones that give her an opportunity to know people a little better.

Team member features are a perfect example.

“Every interview is different, and that’s what makes them special,” she said. “I get to know my coworkers on a deeper level while also getting to show them off to the BryMar community.”

A conversation that starts with someone’s career can turn into a story about their family, what motivates them, an unexpected hobby, or an experience that shaped who they are.

Those are the details Makayla loves.

She gets that same feeling when she has the opportunity to attend client events. Being there in person gives her a different perspective on the organizations BryMar works with and the people behind them.

“I always leave feeling inspired by the work they’re doing to support their missions and better their communities,” she said.

For Makayla, those experiences are a reminder that there is always more to someone’s story than their job title or organization.

And perhaps that’s what she brings to BryMar best: she pays attention to the people behind the work.

The Person Behind the Stories

Outside of BryMar, the people closest to Makayla remain a big part of her world.

She enjoys spending time with her fiancé, Diego, her siblings, and the other members of their household: Nala, their dog, and cats Raury and Cartier. Growing up as the oldest of five made family a constant in her life, and staying connected with the people she loves continues to be important to her.

She’s also an avid reader, enjoys Pilates, and has developed a love for cooking.

Her passion for cooking really took off during the COVID quarantine, when extra time at home became an opportunity to experiment with recipes and discover how much she enjoyed being in the kitchen.

Whether she’s around the table with family, getting to know a coworker, cheering on a client, or turning a conversation into a story worth sharing, there’s a common thread in the things Makayla enjoys most: bringing people together.

That genuine care for people comes through in everything she does. Makayla has a way of noticing the stories and moments that make BryMar special—and helping others see them, too. We’re grateful to have her as part of the BryMar team and even more excited to watch her continue to grow, find her voice, and share the stories that make BryMar, BryMar.
